Mideast Chapter members all do great things every day to impact patient care while maximizing patient’s outcomes. The Board decided to highlight a member in each newsletter to share with us tips and words of inspiration they have acquired in their role as a WOC Nurse. We decided that our Mideast Chapter WOCN Fellows should be the first members we highlight.
Ann Marie Nie practices at Dayton Children’s Hospital and is one of our 2024 WOCN Fellows. We hope you enjoy this highlight with words of inspiration from one of our MEC WOC Stars!
INSPIRATION FROM OUR WOCN® FELLOW
Ann Marie Nie
How would you describe your path in WOC Nursing that brought you to performing at such a high-level?
When I became a WOC Nurse, there was very little in the literature and almost non-existent information on how to care for the pediatric population as a WOC Nurse. I had incredible mentors that encouraged me to create the evidence that was needed. In the final week of my WOC training at Emory, Dorothy Doherty would say to me, “Ann Marie, those babies need you.” I have an innate ability to take the information that was meant for adults and translate it for pediatrics. I did this by understanding pathophysiology. One of my preceptors, Mary Arnold Long, encouraged me to seek out information. At my first Mideast Regional conference in Indianapolis, I met two incredible individuals who have become lifelong mentors: Joy Pittman and Dea Kent. Along with Mary, these three wonderful, advanced practice nurses encouraged me in my lifelong passion for learning. But obtaining higher education degrees is not enough if we want to create evidence. Joy Pittman recommended me to the NPIAP Board of Directors for my work in pediatric pressure injuries. Several board members encouraged me to obtain my PhD. This degree has allowed me to “dig deep” into pressure injuries for all age groups. What is the same, what is different from the adults? Those answers change practice.
My journey started with a passion for learning and understanding, but it required individuals who were there to support me along the way. I feel very honored that I have been able to contribute to the WOC Nurse family and to help all ages of pediatric patients with my research.
Thank you!
Ann Marie
